OpenAI says it is expanding its Daybreak cyber defense service with two access tiers: Daybreak Blue and Daybreak Red. It is also introducing GPT-5.6-Cyber through Daybreak Red.
According to OpenAI, Daybreak Blue provides approved defenders access to frontier general-purpose models, while Daybreak Red is the route through which GPT-5.6-Cyber is available. TechCrunch independently reported that the expansion adds a cyber-focused model designed for defensive work and that Daybreak now consists of Blue and Red tiers.
The operational point is less about a single new model than about how access is being structured. OpenAI is separating capabilities into tiers intended for approved defenders and framing the change around a narrowing preparation window: it says threat actors are increasingly using AI to conduct cyberattacks at unprecedented speed and scale.
That framing should be read as OpenAI’s assessment, not as an independently quantified measure of current attack volume or model performance. The available reporting confirms the announced expansion and tiered structure, but it does not establish how broadly the service will be deployed, how the tiers will differ in practice beyond the stated access description, or what defensive outcomes GPT-5.6-Cyber will produce.
